Finding the blessings – in the good and bad

Many times in my life, I have labeled things as good or bad, desired or undesired, right or wrong, all based on my mental and perceptional rules about how I thought life ought to be or how outcomes should happen. Slowly, through a culmination of meditation and work on my inner self, a more robust understanding started to take hold of me during the past 1.5 decades. One that would lead me to a more peaceful life and a more harmonious way of understanding myself.
Often, I could say, “Oh my, what a gorgeous day! Isn’t it so wonderful? We have been given such a great day to enjoy.” Then, looking at my definition of a great day, I realized that it meant the sun was shining, the temperature was 75-80 degrees, there was low humidity, and there was a slight breeze to help cool me off.
When I was little, I loved playing in the rain. But as I matured towards adulthood, I formed my thoughts about what constituted a beautiful day based on those around me and what society deemed an appropriate definition.
However, during this journey toward self-discovery, I began to embrace those moments some would say weren’t a blessing like rain-filled days. Something most people would say is not a blessing. But I started reverting to my childhood days when I loved the rain. The rain is amazing. It clears and cleanses the environment for us. It nurtures us and continues to foster life on this planet. We forget that rain we are 80% water. Rain brings much-needed water to the plants we eat. It cleanses the air and the plants around us. It is the fundamental building block we all need to survive.
And yes, that was a simple example of finding the blessings in the “ugly” or “bad.”
